A message from the committee

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

Most, if not all of you have already heard about the incident involving African-American George Floyd and now former Minneapolis police office Derek Chauvin resulting in the death of Mr Floyd, leaving his daughter Gianna, 6, and widow, Roxie Washington behind.

Since then, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets protesting in more than 75 cities across the United Stated and thousands have gathered and marched in London, Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol.

The death of George Floyd is one of many examples of systemic oppression and racialised inequality towards the black community in the US and Europe.

This was the first major incident since the new committee has formed, therefore we, the 2020/21 committee of CivSoc, would like to let you know that we value every single person in our community and roundly condemn the acts against ethnic minorities. We stand in solidarity and wholeheartedly support the organisations that fight along with these people globally.

This is why we want to bring attention to the Black Lives Matter movement. BLM is an international civil rights movement aimed to end discrimination and racism against people of colour and demanding equality and justice.

We are sharing the BLM carrd and other links where you can support the movement by signing petitions, donating money or by further educating yourself in this matter. It is not enough to be not racist anymore, we have to be anti-racist.

If you have any other useful material, do not hesitate to contact us.
