Happy pride month from CivSoc!

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

For many, June, or Pride Month is an amazing time to showcase your true self without any fear of judgement. Although we want to preserve that amazing feeling, we must be reminded of the sacrifices the LGBTQ+ community has had to make to come this far. The origins of LGBTQ+ Pride are rooted in the New York Stonewall riots of June 1969. A year later the riots were commemorated with the first Pride marches across US cities which then spread to other countries over the years. Since then, Pride Month has been an opportunity to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community.

We, the committee of CivSoc want to remind everyone that we are in this together and our committee is committed to valuing each one of you as a unique and equal individual - regardless of sexual orientation, gender or skin tone - and as a valued member of our CivSoc community.

Not everyone has had the privilege of having an accepting family, community or culture. For some people, university is the first place they have been able to be open about their identity or sexual orientation, which is why we recognise the importance of having a supportive community here at CivSoc with no tolerance to abuse or discrimination.

We hope everyone stays safe and enjoys June and Pride Month to their fullest!
